Start out introducing
centers very slowly.
All of the centers could
have books, including blocks and home.
Ask the children what
they'd like in the centers and we stock them based on their
responses.
Make sure students know
where to place the
products from centers (a basket, teacher's desk, etc.)
.
Model how to use materials, such as how to use the ink pad...not for
painting your hand or stamping the table and how to store their
journals so they're easy to find.
Establish rules regarding
expectation for clean-up and talking.
Have sharing time daily
after centers so the other students can get ideas, take pride in
doing a good job, and have a meaningful purpose for doing the work.
This also allows the teacher an opportunity to assess student
progress. If they have not completed their work or have done not
their best job, they finish it at recess. This is very rarely a
problem, because they know they will be sharing with their friends
and that is positive motivation. After sharing, they are in charge
of displaying their work in the classroom or putting it in their
mailboxes.
