Groundhog Day
Maureen
Tumenas from Kinderkorner
made this Groundhog book and allowed me to post it on my website. Click here for
the Wake Up,
Groundhog Book.

This file folder game has the groundhog moving
through his burrow from his bed to the outdoors. There are cloud and sun
cards (several more clouds than suns) for the children to draw. They move
one space ahead for a cloud card and one space backwards for a sun card.

We
colored and glued a groundhog picture to both sides of a small plate. On
this side the groundhog did not see his shadow so we would have an early
spring. On the other side the groundhog saw his shadow so we would have 6
more weeks of winter.

This
groundhog puppet has a popsicle stick glued between the front and the
back. A hole is made in the bottom of a styrofoam cup (covered with green
construction paper “grass”) so the groundhog can pop up.

We each tossed our plate into the air two
times. We put a dot above the side that we could see when the plate hit
the floor. If our toss “predictions” are correct, we will have an early
spring this year. (We hope so!)

For math, we discussed if a groundhog was
taller or shorter than some everyday items, like the book and ruler.

I used a
borrowed groundhog puppet, but you could enlarge a groundhog picture to do
the same activity.

We made groundhog cupcakes, decorated with M&M
eyes, marshmallow teeth (laid on their side), and vanilla wafer ears.
